Artist Statement

For a long time, my art was mostly about recording. I have always loved portraits- a lot of my energy has been dedicated to carving fondness into ledger. Over time, the way I portray memory has shifted. In my work now, often something needs to be warped, or questionable–somewhat outside of reality. I love to do this by playing with the presentation og faces, blurring them out, distorting them, adding clones. Reality & time are easily malleable. This is also relevant for how I explore topics of mental health, which I feel is very important as an ongoing discussion today. Too many things should be less ignored.

As I have exerienced more life and dealt with more time, I also enjoy more and more working out of nostalgia and connection. I immortalize many of the people closest to me, and I appreciate that some of my works can document change in this way. My twin-brother, who is probably my favorite person and one of my favorite subjects, is a good example for this. Just recently I have been working on a series that attempts to acknowledge what time and distance can do to knowledge & understanding within our strongest connections. I have two portraits of him so far, four years apart, and while they do display the difference between the time when we lived in the same place and now, the pieces give off more of an air of pride than a lack of anything. I like working in diptychs or triptychs to tell a story, and then being sure to tie the works together intentionally. My favorite media to work in is 2D mixed-media, but I've been exploring various types of paint- it's good to grow.
